The Family Calendar System That Reduced Our Mental Load

For a long time, I felt like I was carrying our family’s schedule in my head: school events, birthdays, dentist appointments, travel plans, dance performances, babysitter hours, gifts to buy, weekends away… there was always something to remember.

And the problem wasn’t that we didn’t have calendars.

The problem was that the information was scattered everywhere.

That’s when we created a simple family calendar system.

The Heart of Our Home

Our family calendar lives on the fridge. It’s a large magnetic wall calendar that sits right in the center of our kitchen, where everyone sees it multiple times a day.

Because it’s always visible, it naturally becomes part of our routine. For those who are curious, this is the magnetic calendar we currently use on our fridge.

Every morning, I quickly glance at it while making coffee or preparing breakfast. Whenever something new comes up, I add it immediately.

What Goes On The Calendar

Pretty much everything. From school events and family visits to travel plans, appointments and everyday commitments, our calendar has become the place where everything important lives.

As an expat family, we also use it to keep track of visits from friends and family coming from abroad.

We Have One Rule: If It’s Important, It Goes On The Calendar

The wall calendar is our family’s central source of truth.

Birthdays, school events, travel plans, dentist appointments, dance performances, babysitter hours, gifts to buy… if it’s important, it goes on the calendar.

BUT I also add important events to my phone calendar and invite my husband, Renaud, directly to them.

Partly because it helps block time in his work calendar.

And partly because it leaves very little room for the classic: “Oh, I forgot.”

No more excuses!

Why This System Works

Our wall calendar gives us visibility.

Everyone can see what’s coming up at a glance.

For events that require planning ahead, I also add them to my phone calendar and invite my husband directly.

The combination works surprisingly well.

The wall calendar keeps the whole family aware of what’s happening, while calendar invitations make sure important commitments don’t get lost in the busyness of everyday life.

It’s Not Perfect

To be completely honest, I still sometimes have to remind my husband about things.

No system is perfect.

But I’d say it works about 90% of the time, which is a huge improvement over relying on memory alone.

Final Thoughts

This calendar isn’t just a planning tool.

It’s a simple system that helps our family stay connected, organized, and prepared.

And more importantly, it frees up mental space for the things that matter most.

Sometimes the best systems are also the simplest.
