How I Balance Family, Marriage, Work and Time for Myself

Life can get busy very quickly. Between work, family commitments, school activities, household responsibilities, friendships, and everything else that fills a calendar, it’s easy to feel pulled in a hundred different directions.

For a long time, I thought the solution was to simply do more. Become more productive, get more organized and manage my time better.

But over time, I realized something important: I can’t do everything.

And trying to do everything usually leaves me feeling overwhelmed.

Instead, I focus on four priorities that help guide my decisions when life gets busy. Not because I balance them perfectly. But because they remind me what matters most.

1. Family

Family is my biggest priority.

For me, that means making intentional time for Chloe, but also for our life together as a family.

Some of our best moments aren’t elaborate or expensive. They are simple_

  • Watching Frozen together on the couch.
  • Drawing at the kitchen table.
  • Running errands together.
  • Going grocery shopping.
  • Visiting an indoor play center.
  • Having a picnic at the park with friends.

What matters most isn’t what we’re doing.

It’s being present.

I want Chloe to feel that she has my attention, not just my availability.

2. Marriage

One thing parenthood taught us is that marriage doesn’t take care of itself. The arrival of a child was wonderful, but it also changed our relationship in ways we didn’t fully expect.

For a while, it felt like everything revolved around being parents and eventually, we realized we needed to intentionally make space for being a couple too.

Today, every Thursday evening, a babysitter comes to look after Chloe and no matter what, that time belongs to us.

  • Sometimes we go to the cinema.
  • Sometimes we play golf.
  • Sometimes we grab a drink or share a simple meal.

The activity itself doesn’t matter. What matters is that we show up for each other.

It’s not always easy, and it’s definitely a luxury we’re grateful for, but it has become one of the best investments we’ve made in our relationship.

3. Time For Myself

For years, I treated time for myself as optional, something I would do if there was time left over.

The problem is that there was almost never any time left over. Today, I protect that time and for me, it usually means sport. Whether it’s running or training for Hyrox, movement helps me clear my mind, release stress, and feel more like myself.

I also make time for friends: a coffee, a drink, an evening catching up. Those moments matter too.

They remind me that I am more than an employee, a wife, or a mother.

4. Work

Work is still one of my priorities because I enjoy being challenged, I enjoy learning new things, I enjoy growing professionally and I’ve learned not to feel guilty about that.

Sometimes making work possible requires practical decisions.

For example, Chloe attends summer camp in July and at her age, working while caring for her at home simply isn’t realistic.

Choosing work doesn’t mean choosing it over family, it means creating a structure that allows both to exist.

Balance Is Not Perfect

Some weeks feel beautifully balanced. Others don’t.

Sometimes work takes more space. Sometimes family needs more attention. Sometimes a workout gets skipped. Sometimes date night doesn’t happen.

Life isn’t a perfectly organized planner and that’s okay, the goal isn’t perfect balance.

The goal is knowing what matters most and returning to those priorities when life gets busy.

Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I come back to these four priorities.

They don’t solve everything but they help me make better decisions, one week at a time.
